Our mathematics department is dedicated to giving students the confidence to acquire and use mathematical skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. Our department strives to achieve excellence in mathematics teaching and learning, so that students make significant progress regardless of their prior achievement in this interesting and varied subject.
Math is a core subject studied by all students throughout their school career, making it one of the most important and interesting subjects in the curriculum. Math is everywhere, and we want students to have the knowledge and, more importantly, the skills necessary to participate fully in our information-driven society.
When we teach mathematics, we aim to:
- Encourage every student, regardless of prior achievement, to learn mathematics with confidence, enjoyment and challenge;
- Providing a curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and consolidates previous work in order to improve long-term retention of key information and processes;
- Building students' confidence to deal with unfamiliar problems in unfamiliar situations, and enhancing their ability to solve problems in many contexts;
- Understand the language and notation associated with mathematics, enabling them to think mathematically and communicate mathematically in a subject that has extensive real-life applications;
- Educate students on how mathematics plays a role in everyday life as well as financial matters that will be important as they become young adults.
