KS4 Curriculum

Department Vision: Science pupils will emerge from TutorBoost with an understanding of the scientific process that aims to make sense of the world. They will possess the skills to critically think about a range of situations. As a result, they will be scientifically literate and capable of excelling academically at university and beyond, as well as able to apply their knowledge to real-world situations.

We prepare pupils for AQA, Edexcel, and OCR GCSE specifications. In our department, we have two GCSE examiners who share their marking experience each year and provide advice and guidance to other members of the department. Therefore, being able to provide valuable insights into what and how students should approach their exams to gain maximum marks.

Students will have enough time to study both the foundation and higher levels for GCSE based on our specialised timetable and contents. Our teachers prepare pupils for GCSE Combined Sciences, Trilogy (Separate Science, formally known as triple science) specifications.

We value the importance of practical lessons in science and we aim to help students understand using visuals, videos and animations. Custom made videos from our own teachers are also avaliable for pupils to watch learn and explore.

In Years 10-11, end-of-unit assessments include MCQs written by the head of science and summative assessments incorporate exam paper questions marked by the teacher. Pupils are provided with individual feedback and targets, and a re-teach lesson is planned to correct any misconceptions across the class. To build a picture of the learning journey, the end-of-unit assessment data is recorded. Weak topics are then targeted in the revision period. Depending on the results of these assessments, the long-term plan can be reviewed, and discussions about this are held in line management meetings.
